CHECKLIST: LIMITING BUILDING ACCESS
- Ensure doors are sturdily constructed and securely installed
- Use heavy-duty locks on exterior doors
- Two-inch deadbolts are most secure
- Metal guard plates can be added to strengthen doors and protect against kick-ins
- Hinges should be mounted on the insides of door to prevent intruders from gaining entry by merely taking
- Install emergency alarms
- Put mirrors in elevators
- Include peepholes for personal protection
- Should give a wide-angle view (180 degrees)
- Install on low doors to maximize access for children for disabled individuals (or install two peepholes)
- Educate residents and guests about not letting strangers into the building. Emphasize this is in new resident handbook, and via newsletter and other notices.
