CHECKLIST: LIGHTING

• Install lighting wherever people typically walk at night (walkways, parking lots, building entrances)
• Place lights so they make it difficult for intruders to hide in the shadows
• Check to make sure new hiding places have not been created when lights are on
• Install mirrors, windows and additional lightning to eliminate blind spots and increase visibility
• Change bulb and clean fixtures regularly as lighting levels will change over time and light intensity diminishes as bulb age and dirt accumulates on fixtures
• Keep trees and shrubbery properly trimmed to minimize shadows
• Use photo cells, timers and motion detectors to turn lights on and off
• Reset timers at the change of seasons or after power failure
• Perform regular inspections to ensure that all lights work properly
